Summary
Out of the 29 respondents 2/3 people were under 25. Majority
of people use their wetsuit once a month (6)- once a year (11) or not at all
(7) with a couple of people using theirs weekly (2) or once every few years
(3). It was surprising that surfing didn’t dominate in the water activities, as
there were more people who either didn’t swim or did something else such as
kayaking or wakeboarding and Jet Ski.
When it comes to purchasing a wetsuit majority of people buy
one every 7 years or more. And as expected when people no longer want their
wetsuit it gets handed down (58.62%) followed by donating it (30.03%). 65.52%
of people aren’t concerned about what wetsuits are made out of. When it comes
to recycling. 44.83% of people would want it to become a surfing accessory ie
wet mat, bucket etc and 37.93% of people wanted an every day item such as a bag
or a wallet.
28 people out of the 29 would donate their old wetsuit if
they knew the funds from recycling them would go towards swimming education for
children in NZ with the 1 person not doing so as they prefer to up-cycle them
themselves.
55.17% would approach the issue of children learning to swim
via funding schools instead of funding pools (6.9%) or taking them to the beach
(20.69%) and some people simply didn’t know where to start (20.69%)
And people from this survey would prefer to either give the wetsuits
to a local surf shop or the nearest school.
